voted for him. i'm wolf blitzer. you're in "the situation room." >>> tempers flaring on capitol hill. senator john mccain lashing out at one of our cnn producers who questioned why he was missing a key hearing on the attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi, libya. mccain has been a sharp critic of the president and his administration complaining lawmakers are not getting enough information. and when asked why he missed that meeting today, he lashed out. our senior congressional correspondent dana bash is up on capitol hill. she's got more on this sensitive story. dana, what happened? >> reporter: well, it turns out, wolf, cnn learned that most of the republicans on this key committee that had a briefing on what happened in benghazi did not go. in fact, it was three out of the eight republicans on that committee. one of those republicans who did not go to that briefing, it was a classified briefing, was john mccain. now, mccain at the time was having a press conference yesterday lashing out at the administration for not getting enough information and calling for a select committee to
information getting out to the gazans at this point. wolf blitzer is eight miles from gaza's border. can you tell us anything about this building? >> the only thing i know about the building, there are several media organizations that have their base in gaza in that building. the israelis -- i spoke yesterday with an israeli army spokesman who said there are also hamas organizations or hamas related infrastructure in that building. that's why they say they're targeting that building. but there are several arabic language news organizations based there. as you point out, carol, this is the second time the israelis have gone after that building. so other than what the israelis are saying, they say there are legitimate targets there, what we're seeing on the ground from our own reporters, that's escalating into a pretty serious development even as diplomats are trying to achieve some sort of cease-fire. when you see what's going on that cease-fire looks increasingly remote. let's see what happens behind the scenes there. >> i have heard, wolf, israel says if there's not some sort of cease-fire

are fighting over. >>> just a while ago our wolf blitzer spoke with former british prime minister tony blair about the cross-border battalions between israel and hamas, and wolf joins us now, and, wolf, i know that he also serves as the peace envoy, the middle east peace envoy. does he believe that peace can be achieved here? >> well, he is not very upbeat in the short-term. he is obviously like everyone else would like to see some sort of immediate cease-fire to stop the killing on the israeli and the palestinian side in gaza. he knows there's a lot of diplomatic activity going on behind the scenes. he himself has been in touch with most of the parties not directly with hamas since as a representative of what's called the quartet, including the quartet and european union. the u.s. and european union don't recognize hamas. they regard hamas as a terrorist organization, but there have been -- he has been involved with egypt, obviously, turkey, many of the other parties who are working feverishly behind the scenes to get some sort of cease-fire. look, if there is a cease-fire, that's just the
